Tehran Times – The Iraqi city of Fallujah continues to suffer the ghastly consequences of a U.S. military onslaught in late 2004. According to the authors of a new study, “Cancer, Infant Mortality and Birth Sex-Ratio in Fallujah, Iraq 2005–2009,” the people of Fallujah are experiencing higher rates of cancer, leukemia, infant mortality, and sexual mutations than those recorded among survivors in Hiroshima and Nagasaki in the years after those Japanese cities were incinerated by U.S. atomic bomb strikes in 1945. The assault on Fallujah, a city located 43 miles west of Baghdad, was one of the most horrific war crimes of our time. <a href="http://www.tehrantimes.com/index_View.asp?code=223580"target="_blank">Read article

Financial Times – So now we know. Iraq posed no real threat prior to the Anglo-American invasion of March 2003. There was no credible intelligence to suggest any link between Saddam Hussein and Osama bin Laden. But what the assault on Iraq did do was proliferate jihadism across the Middle East and incubate Islamist extremism in the UK, leading to the London Tube and bus bombings five years ago and 15 other “substantial plots”. “Arguably we gave Osama bin Laden his Iraqi jihad,” Eliza Manningham-Buller, former director-general of MI5, the British domestic security service, told the UK war inquiry this week. Read Article

I testified last week to the Chilcot inquiry. My experience demonstrates an emerging and dangerous problem with the process. This is not so much a problem with Sir John Chilcot and his panel, but rather with the government bureaucracy – Britain’s own “deep state” – that is covering up its mistakes and denying access to critical documents. There is only one solution to this problem, and it requires decisive action. Read Article

Press TV – UK defense secretary says American and British forces used depleted uranium (DU) ammunitions during the US-led invasion of Iraq in 2003. “UK forces used about 1.9 metric tons of depleted uranium ammunition in the Iraq war in 2003,” UK Defense Secretary Liam Fox said in a written reply to the House of Commons on Thursday, the Kuwait News Agency reported. The announcement came after a joint study by the environment, health and science ministries in Iraq said there were communities near the cities of Najaf, Basra and Fallujah with increased rates of cancer and birth defects over the past five years. More than 40 sites across Iraq are contaminated with high levels of radiation and dioxins. Read Article

New York Times – An outsize ceremonial skeleton key traded hands last week in the official transfer of Camp Cropper, the last jail in Iraq that had been under American control. The Iraqi government was, one American general said, “equipped, prepared and poised to take over.” But it did not end the dark history of prisons in Iraq over the last seven years: Just five days later, four prisoners, at least three of them said to be high-ranking members in the nation’s most violent insurgent group, escaped. The warden and several guards are nowhere to be found. Read Article

The Australian – BRITAIN’S Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg has caused a stir by saying Britain’s decision to send troops to invade Iraq was illegal. Mr Clegg, standing in for Prime Minister David Cameron during question time while Mr Cameron is in the US, made the remark during heated exchanges with former foreign secretary Jack Straw. Clashing with Mr Straw on a separate issue, Mr Clegg said: “Perhaps one day he will account for his role in the most disastrous decision of all: the illegal invasion of Iraq.” His remark threatened to cause a rift with Mr Cameron and his Conservative partners — who supported the invasion in 2003 — and pre-empts the Chilcot inquiry into the war. It also raised questions over the position of British troops in Iraq and whether opponents of the war would use the comments as the basis for a legal challenge of the invasion. Read Article
