Greece debt: EU agrees bailout deal

Guardian – The eurozone has agreed a multibillion-euro bailout for Greece as part of a package to shore up the single currency after weeks of crisis, the Guardian has learnt. Senior sources in Brussels said that Berlin had bowed to the bailout agreement despite huge resistance in Germany and that the finance ministers of the “eurozone” – the 16 member states including Greece who use the euro – are to finalise the rescue package on Monday. The single currency’s rulebook will also be rewritten to enforce greater fiscal discipline among members. The member states have agreed on “co-ordinated bilateral contributions” in the form of loans or loan guarantees to Greece if Athens finds itself unable to refinance its soaring debt and requests help from the EU, a senior European commission official said. China unlikely to buy gold from IMF

China Daily – Contrary to much speculation China may not buy the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) remaining 191.3 tons of gold which is up for sale as it does not want to upset the market, a top industry official told China Daily yesterday. “It is not feasible for China to buy the IMF bullion, as any purchase or even intent to do so would trigger market speculation and volatility,” said the official from the China Gold Association, on condition of anonymity. He said China would continue to shore up its gold reserves by acquiring gold mines abroad rather than purchases on the international market. Some analysts had earlier said China would purchase the IMF gold in an effort to diversify its dollar asset-dominated foreign exchange reserves. According to estimates, over 70 percent of China’s $2.4 trillion foreign exchange reserves are in dollar assets. Read Article

They cajole and tempt and confuse and threaten the leaders of governments worldwide to pay off the failed bets of the big bankers using the taxpayer funds of their countries. George Soros – The euro will face bigger tests than Greece

Financial Times – Otmar Issing, one of the fathers of the euro, correctly states the principle on which the single currency was founded. As he wrote in the FT last week, the euro was meant to be a monetary union but not a political one. Participating states established a common central bank but refused to surrender the right to tax their citizens to a common authority. This principle was enshrined in the Maastricht treaty and has since been rigorously interpreted by the German constitutional court. The euro was a unique and unusual construction whose viability is now being tested. The construction is patently flawed. A fully fledged currency requires both a central bank and a Treasury. Ed – Do not forget who is writing this article in the world’s most uinfluential financial paper. George Soros made his multi-billion dollar fortune from talking down currency values, and then buying them on the cheap. It should also be noted that the undercurrent of the story is that the Greek episode shows that the Euro can only work with central fiscal control & the associated loss of democractic accountability and soverign power – all straight from the New World Order handbook.

It will be huge (a conversion of an old covered market), expensive (the bankers will struggle to keep construction costs under €500 million — £440 million) and architecturally ambitious, with two leaning towers. Critics say that it represents a kind of hubris, a celebration of the swollen power of the eurozone at a time when it is facing its biggest crisis — banks across the world, infected by the “New Modesty”, are scaling back their building plans. Telegraph – The European Union has shown its righteous wrath by stripping Greece of its vote at a crucial meeting next month, the worst humiliation ever suffered by an EU member state. The council of EU finance ministers said Athens must comply with austerity demands by March 16 or lose control over its own tax and spend policies altogether. It if fails to do so, the EU will itself impose cuts under the draconian Article 126.9 of the Lisbon Treaty in what would amount to economic suzerainty. Read article

AFP – China’s holdings of US Treasury bonds tumbled in December, allowing Japan to take over as the top holder of American government debt, according to Treasury data released Tuesday. China’s bond holdings dropped substantially to 755.4 billion dollars in the last month of December from 789.6 billion in November, said the Treasury’s international capital data report. Japan’s holdings increased to 768.8 billion dollars in December from 757.3 billion dollars in November, according to the data. Read Article

Eastern Europe to host EU nuclear waste storage facility

The Times – High-level nuclear waste from across the European Union could be shipped to eastern Europe for burial in a central underground storage facility under plans being considered by EU member states. The Times has learnt that the project, which comes amid a resurgence of interest in nuclear power, could be given the green light later this year by the European Commission. So far, only a handful of countries worldwide have built a permanent resting place for their stockpiles of waste, the unwanted by-product of nuclear power generation. The rest keep the material in interim storage facilities, such as Britain’s Sellafield plant in West Cumbria, where about 5,000 half-tonne canisters of vitrified atomic waste are stored in concrete and steel chutes, some of which will remain highly radioactive for up to 100,000 years. Daily Telegraph - The Business Secretary spoke of the “remarkable success” of the beleaguered euro despite the problems which have beset the single currency in recent weeks. The peer was speaking just as a group of key eurozone countries lined up to pledge “determined and co-ordinated action” over Greece. In an interview, Lord Mandelson, a former European Union trade commissioner, spoke in praise of the currency, describing it as a “remarkable success” He said: “It is strong and that is why it is going to remain intact. I think in the longer term it would be in Britain’s interests to be part of the eurozone.” Read Article

Ed – Mandelson is the power behind the throne of both Blair and now Brown. He also holidays with the opposition Conservatives 2IC, George Osborne. He is Britain’s Henry Kissinger and he knows the agenda very well indeed. As we have warned time and again, it will not be Labour but the supposedly Euro-sceptic Conservatives who will hand away the last vestiges of Britain’s sovereignty by joining the Euro, after presenting it to the people as the only way out of the massive financial hole that the country is currently in.
